We took it easy in Northwest Iceland, pretty much just driving and soaking in the scenery as we drove southwest. The Icelandic horses are everywhere in this region, roaming wide swaths of (their owner's) land, We stopped on a remote dirt road and watched this group of horses frolick (and mate) and graze for a while.

We went out to this remote church at Þingeyrar (Thingeyrakirkja), a strange aold church in the middle of nowhere with unique stylings including thousands of handmade golden stars on a blue ceiling. It's kind of amazing what they have out seemingly in the middle of nowhere

Next we stopped at Eiríksstaðir, the former homestead of Eiríkr Þorvaldsson, known as Erik the Red, the famous explorer and first European discoverer of Greenland, as well as the father of Leif Eiriksson, the first European discoverer of North America. The site is thought to be that of the original farm he grew up on (although the turf hut is an authentic recreation of a viking dwelling).

The drive was beautiful as usual, and we finally made it to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula as a pouring rainstorm rolled in, keeping us in our Guesthouse for the rest of the night.
