Scandinavia Day 4 - Western Norway: Godoy, Alesund, and the Hjorundfjord

August 19, 2026  •  2 Comments

We woke up super early in Bergen, headed to the airport, and took a short flight to Oslo and then to Ålesund, Norway.

Ålesund is a beautiful town scattered over several islands in Western Norway. The infrastructure is jaw-dropping. The airport is on the island of Vigra, which is connected to multiple adjacent islands by a series of bridges and underwater tunnels. This advanced and remarkably expensive infrastructure supports a small population of less than 60K! We made our way from the airport on Vigra to our Airbnb in Alnes on the island of Godøy.

Godøy is dazzling, and the weather was perfect. I got a chance to do some droning over Alnes:

after which we did a cold plunge at the beautiful Sandvika Beach.

We then headed to Ålesund and admired the town from the Fjellstua viewpoint.

Interestingly, the high vantage point served as a Nazi fortification in occupied Norway during WW2, and the ruins of an old bunker remain at the summit of the hill overlooking the town.

We had lunch (at a Thai restaurant) and explored the Ålesund city center,

before getting in the car to explore the fjords for the afternoon/evening. We took a ferry across the Storfjord from Solavågen to Festøya,

and then drove along the western edge of the beautiful Hjorundfjord.

We made our way to the small town of Saebo,

and took another small ferry across the fjord

to the town of Urke.

I got about 12 seconds of droning before it ran out of battery (as I forgot to charge it). default default default

So I settled for photos at ground level.

The drive along the fjord between Urke and Øye was like something out of a movie.

And the drive back to Alesund was equally striking.

Wow. What do the people do for a living on those tiny islands I don’t see any livestock or anything. They can’t all run the light house haha.
